FOREIGN RELATIONS

Germany has a network of 229 diplomatic missions abroad and maintains relations with more than 190 countries. As of 2011 it is the largest contributor to the budget of the European Union and the third largest contributor to the UN. Germany is a member of NATO, the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the G8, the G20, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Germany seeks to advance the creation of a more unified European political, defence, and security apparatus

It has played a leading role in the European Union since its inception and has maintained a strong alliance with France since the end of World War II.

  • It is the world's third biggest aid donor after the United States and France.
  • The governments of Germany and the United States are close political allies. The two countries are also economically interdependent: 8.8 percent of German exports are US-bound and 6.6 percent of German imports originate from the US.

One of the most important relationships that Germany has formed in the last decades has been with France. German foreign relations with France have directly led to the integration of Europe and the formation of the European Union. Since the ElysA©e Treaty of 1963, which established a new peaceful relationship between Germany and France, Germany has worked to become a unifying force in Europe, and its influence lies behind many of the greatest advances of European unity. Germany has contributed the most of any European country to the budget of the EU, and sponsored initiatives to create the European Defense Force, as well as the international currency, the Euro. - MARIANI -
